Fra il 2000 e il 2013, il mondo ha perso il 7,2% delle sue foreste vergini: ne sono spariti 919.000 chilometri quadrati, un'area grande come il Venezuela. Quasi due terzi della perdita si sono registrati ai tropici, soprattutto in Sudamerica, poi in Asia sudorientale e Africa equatoriale, I ricercatori dell'Università del Maryland, negli Stati Uniti, hanno coordinato il lavoro di colleghi in Europa, Nord America e Asia, confrontando le foto del satelliti nel periodo preso in considerazione. Il risultato del loro lavoro è stato pubblicato sulla rivista «Science Advances». Le foreste vergini, per lo studio, sono quelle di almeno 500 km quadrati che non presentano segni di attività umana. Hanno un ruolo fondamentale nell'assorbire anidride carbonica (riducendo l'effetto serra), proteggere la biodiversità e regolare il flusso dell'acqua negli ecosistemi
